Instructor: Beth deVitry
Skill Level: Beginner
Step into the world of timeless tradition and artistic expression in this hands-on egg decorating class, where you’ll learn the intricate art of creating beautiful Easter eggs using a special technique passed down through generations. Drawing inspiration from Ukrainian pysanky and a tradition taught to me by my German grandmother, this class will guide you through the process of decorating eggs with hot wax, vibrant dyes, and a special tool that transforms simple eggs into intricate works of art.
Using a pin inserted into a clothespin, you will create delicate wax markings on your eggs. This technique, which involves dipping the pin in hot wax, allows you to build intricate patterns and designs, layer by layer, while preserving the egg’s natural beauty. The wax acts as a resist, protecting areas from dye, and creating a stunning contrast between the colored layers.
We’ll use traditional Ukrainian dyes to color our eggs in rich, layered tones—each one a step closer to a masterpiece. By the end of the class, you’ll have created several eggs, each with unique patterns and colors, ready for display or gift-giving.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to prepare the egg and wax for decorating.
- Step-by-step instructions for using the pin-and-clothespin tool to apply hot wax.
- The layering process of using dyes to build colors on the egg.
- Tips for designing traditional and personal motifs.
- The rich cultural history behind pysanky egg decorating.
Materials Provided:
- Eggs (prepped and ready for decorating)
- Special pin-and-clothespin tool
- Hot wax and dyes in traditional Ukrainian colors

Takeaways: At the end of the class, you’ll have a collection of beautifully decorated eggs, each one a testament to your newfound skills and creativity. You’ll also take home the tools and knowledge to continue this tradition on your own, creating eggs that are perfect for Easter or as meaningful gifts for loved ones.
