Instructor: Beth deVitry
Skill Level: Beginner
This hands-on class is an introductory workshop focused on Keum-boo, an ancient Korean technique used to fuse 24-karat gold to a silver surface using heat and pressure. No prior experience with jewelry making or metalworking is required.
In this course, students will create a beautiful pendant or a pair of earrings while learning several foundational skills. The curriculum covers:
- Metalworking Basics: Techniques such as sawing, texturing, and filing silver.
- Keum-boo Process: The core method of applying ultra-pure gold to silver.
- Finishing Techniques: Including “depletion gilding” (bringing fine silver to the surface) and applying patinas to add color and contrast.
The class provides a fully immersive, practical experience suitable for beginners.
Please note that a materials fee of $60 Â is due to the instructor at the time of the class.Â
