Nantucket Trinket Baskets at the Hattie Weselyk Studio – January 11

Instructor: Bob Antonishak

Skill Level: Some basket weaving experience is preferred but not required

This workshop will include the use of all necessary tools, mold, cane, and reed to complete a small Nantucket basket ready for finishing with Polyurethane. The polyurethane finishing will be done outside of the workshop. The mold size and basket will be between 3 and 4 inches in diameter with a solid cherry or walnut base and rim. The Nantucket-style basket is made on a mold using cane and reed material.  The weave is tight and with narrow spacing between the staves. This is a one-day workshop whick require weaving for 3 to 5 hours to complete the basket. The basket-weaving material is cane and reed. The reed is approximately ¼” flat ovel and the cane is 2.25mm to 2.50mm in width. The weaving material is thin and lightweight. It’s easy to weave and “pack” using a pushing tool.

In the workshop, you will create one basket like these pictured. This workshop will include the use of all necessary tools, mold, cane, and reed to complete a Nantucket basket ready for finishing.  The mold size will be between 3 and 5 inches with a solid cherry rim and base.  It is not necessary to have basket-making experience but would be helpful.
