Instructor: Donna Lashof
Skill Level: Intermediate – Participants should have completed several stained glass projects (e.g., panels, butterflies, fish, hearts) and be familiar with the basic cutting, breaking, foiling, and soldering skills.
Master Artisan Donna Lashof will help participants develop the skills and confidence to design and create stained glass art that represents your “Unique Voice” and moves you beyond commercially available patterns. This is an opportunity to pursue more complex ideas while having other similarly experienced artists and an instructor to assist and comment.
This class will be in three 1-day sessions with time between sessions to refine designs, purchase glass and perform “homework” for tasks that don’t require a complete studio.
Session one will be about the design of a pattern. Donna will discuss the elements of a good pattern and provide a handout with tips for creating one which points out the pitfalls often encountered in construction. She will introduce the concept of “resolved design”, one of the three PGC benchmarks used in the evaluation of fine craft.
Participants will develop one or more patterns during this first session, and share their pattern ideas and what they wish to achieve with the finished piece with the group. This provides the opportunity for critique and suggestions from Donna and other participants regarding design, structural factors, and how to go from pattern to panel, which may be useful in refining the pattern.
Before session two, participants will replicate the pattern, purchase the glass for the project, and may begin cutting the pattern and pasting it to the glass. Sessions two and three will be for turning the pattern into a finished project.
During class sessions, participants will have access to all the tools and equipment to create a pattern; cut, grind, foil the glass; solder, frame and finish the panel. Participants purchase their own glass, but copper foil, solder, lead came framing and other supplies are included in the price.
