Instructor: Janet Yunghans & Krista Risley
Skill Level: Beginner
Join us for a creative and hands-on Painted Barn Quilt Workshop, where you’ll design and paint your very own 2’ x 2’ barn quilt. Each student will receive a high-quality piece of MDO plywood, known for its exceptionally smooth surface—an essential feature for creating clean lines and a beautiful finish on your quilt design.
All materials are included to ensure a fun and successful experience. Students will be provided with four foam brushes, a roll of painter’s tape, and their choice of four to five paint colors (depending on the selected design). You’ll have the opportunity to choose one of five available patterns from our curated collection. Once the final selection of designs is confirmed, we’ll share them with participants; they will include favorites such as the Sunflower and Double Cardinal.
During class, you’ll learn techniques for taping, painting, and creating sharp geometric patterns typical of traditional barn quilts. At the end of the session, students will receive detailed instructions for applying urethane and adding an optional border to complete their piece. Since the paint must cure for at least 48 hours before sealing, this final step will need to be done at home.
This workshop is perfect for beginners and experienced painters alike—no prior experience necessary, just a willingness to create and have fun.
There will be a half hour break for lunch from 12-12:30 pm. All materials are included in the tuition.

About the instructors:Â
Janet Yunghans and Krista Risley are friends who have neighboring Christmas Tree Farms in Southern New Jersey. Their shared love of quilting has fostered an interest in the art of barn quilts. A barn quilt is a large panel of painted wood featuring a traditional quilt block. These striking pieces of public art often represent a family history, local heritage or personal passion. This traditional art form has become very popular in recent years, particularly in rural areas. Janet and Krista will be joined by their artistic friend, Kiesha Bond who will bring her enthusiasm and energy to the class.
