Instructor: Beth deVitry
Skill Level: Beginner
Immerse yourself in the ancient art of cloisonné enameling as you create a sun and moon pendant set against a backdrop of a vibrant sunrise sky and a serene moonlit night. In this class, you’ll work with fine silver wire and a fine silver base to bring your celestial design to life, combining rich colors and intricate craftsmanship to create a wearable piece of art.
In this class, you will learn:
Introduction to Cloisonné Enameling: Gain an understanding of this centuries-old technique, the tools and materials used, and how fine silver serves as the perfect medium for achieving fine details and vibrant color.
Designing Your Pendant: Learn how to sketch and transfer your sun and moon design to the fine silver base.
Wirework with Fine Silver: Discover the process of creating delicate compartments (cloisons) using fine silver wire, outlining the sun, moon, and the dynamic skies of your design.
Enameling Techniques: Master the art of applying enamel powders to the compartments, layering and firing each color to build the glowing colors of the sunrise and the tranquil moonlit sky. You’ll learn how to achieve smooth, even enamel surfaces with vibrant transitions. You will also learn to use 24k gold foil as an accent.
Finishing and Polishing: Complete your pendant with finishing touches, including troubleshooting, polishing, and cleaning, to enhance the luminous glow of the enamels.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a beautifully crafted pendant that features your sun and moon design in fine silver and vibrant enamel, perfect for wearing or gifting. We will be working with Japanese-leaded enamels for the best color. All materials and tools are provided. This class is ideal for beginners as well as those with some prior jewelry-making experience—just bring your creativity and a passion for learning!
Materials Needed: Students should bring paper, pencil and eraser, sharpie marker, preferred magnification if needed (optivisor)
