Instructor: Dan Hayward

Skill Level: All levels – No prior glass experience required

Description: During this workshop stained glass Master Artisan Dan Hayward will launch you into the wide world of mosaics, focusing on the glass-on-glass form. The format of the workshop is unique in that includes a combination of in-person instruction and assistance, work-at-home time, and in-person finishing.
On Day 1, you will receive an overview of the mosaic form and the simple tools, material and techniques to turn a collection of scrap glass into a pleasing work of art. You will develop a design (up to 10” x 12”) or choose from several of the instructor’s patterns. You will also select the backing for the work (clear glass or mirror) and how
you wish to frame the project for hanging (zinc, brass, or in a pre-made 8” x 10” picture frame). Students will collect glass from Dan’s extensive collection of stained glass remnants and scrap and begin working.

For those who choose metal framing material, Dan will assist you in cutting and soldering the frame to the glass, so as you create your mosaic, you may glue glass all the way to the edge of the frame. At the end of the day, you will take home your project, your collection of glass remnants and scraps, and a loaned tool and materials kit.
During the time between on-site sessions, you will work at home, steadily creating your mosaic.

On Day 2, everyone re-convenes at the studio with their fully finished – except for grouting – projects, and Dan will guide everyone through the process of applying grout to fill the spaces between the glass pieces glued to the backing. (If you elect NOT to grout, you may use Day 2 to create another project).

No prior experience is required.

Outcome: The result will be something you may admire in a window, just like a piece of stained glass, or use it as a decorative piece to catch one’s eye in any room.

Registration fee includes glass, tools, and supplies.
