Intro to Blacksmithing – May 20

Instructor: Nicholas Tucci

Skill Level: Beginner

Step into the world of blacksmithing and unlock the secrets of this ancient art form in our immersive workshop! This hands-on class is designed for beginners with little to no experience in blacksmithing. It will cover the fundamental techniques necessary to forge and shape metal into functional and artistic objects.

In this workshop, you will learn about shop safety and the importance of proper tool handling. You will then be guided through the process of lighting and maintaining a coal fire, a traditional method of heating metal for forging. You’ll gain essential skills in hammer control, a critical aspect of blacksmithing, as you learn how to manipulate metal with precision.

As you progress in the class, you’ll be introduced to various techniques such as drawing out, scrolling, fullering, and half-face blows, which are fundamental to creating a wide range of blacksmithing projects. Students will make hooks, plant hangers, or fireplace pokers.

Throughout the workshop, you’ll work on your own project, practicing the techniques you’ve learned. Under the guidance of our experienced instructor, you’ll create a unique piece of forged metalwork that you can proudly take home.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a solid foundation in blacksmithing, understanding the basic techniques and safety practices necessary to pursue this time-honored craft. Whether you’re interested in creating functional tools or creating unique artistic pieces, this workshop is the perfect starting point for your blacksmithing journey.

The class will take place outside, rain or shine. We will set up a tent if there is rain. Please wear closed-toe shoes and no loose clothing.

Please note *** Students must be at least 16 years old and be able to swing a hammer in order to participate.
