Instructor: Seth Carlson

Skill Level: Intermediate

This intermediate chasing and repousse class explores the techniques used to create a shallow relief or pattern on a pendant or cuff bracelet. Students will learn how to create depth and illusion through the manipulation of light and shadow on a flat or curved surface. Class objectives include exploration of technique and conceptual development of surface sculpting. Students will create a pattern, or design to be transferred onto the surface while considering wearability and how the final piece will interact with the body. Participants will be encouraged to come prepared with a few sketches or images of a design or pattern to be transferred to scale onto the metal.

This class will also briefly discuss the history of surface embellishments on jewelry throughout human history and across cultures.
