Pear Gourds – December 30

Instructor: Jeffrey McCombie

Skill Level: Beginner

Description:

In this class, students will be introduced to the unique craft of gourding through the creation of a simple, but beautiful pear.  To create your unique pear we will focus on elements of design and color. After selecting your gourd, you will learn proper cleaning, sanding, and leveling techniques to prepare your “canvas”. Different methods of color application will be explored giving you the opportunity to choose one that suits your personal taste.  Some artists choose to add adornments i.e. leaves etc their pears; others like a more minimalistic piece; you will decide after viewing a variety of finished pieces. We will then explore techniques for sealing your finished piece. Each participant will leave with a completed piece just in time for the holidays.

All materials are included in the tuition.

About the Instructor:

I am a retired educator who has been been working with hardshell gourds for over 25 years. I am driven by the beauty and imperfections of nature. My artistic goal is to create impressionistic representations of nature’s elements. Techniques borrowed from potters, woodcrafters, blacksmiths result in artistic and sometimes functional art for today’s living.
