Are you fascinated by the timeless art of blacksmithing and the beauty of handcrafted wooden boxes? If so, this workshop is the perfect opportunity for you to delve into the world of metalworking and woodworking to create a custom set of blacksmith hinges for a handmade wooden box! No prior experience is required, as this workshop is designed with beginners in mind. Join us for an immersive, hands-on experience that will ignite your creativity and leave you with a functional and beautifully crafted one-of-a-kind keepsake!

Day 1 – Forge a Set of Hinges

Join us September 9th for the first portion of your box-making class where you’ll learn some blacksmithing techniques to forge out two hinges from mild steel.  We will discuss general blacksmithing safety, forges, and maintaining a fire, anatomy of an anvil, hammer types and techniques, the processes of drawing out, forge welding, drifting, and finishing. Close-toed shoes are a must, and please refrain from wearing synthetic clothing. You must also be able to swing a hammer forcefully for several hours.

Please note *** The blacksmithing class will be split into one morning session from 8 am-12 pm  (morning session is now full)  with 2 students and one afternoon session from 1-5 pm with 2 students. Please email kelly@pacrafts.org to indicate which time you would prefer!

Days 2 & 3 – Box Making 101

This course will teach students how to make a simple box using the hinges made at the blacksmith workshop. Students will learn safety practices and techniques using power tools through discussion, demonstration, and hands-on practice. Learn about wood selection and box construction techniques, using a router, miter, and table saw setup for cutting accuracy. How to use simple cutting jigs and add decorative woods to the lid. Students will gain experience in other woodworking projects, gluing and square-up techniques, and various options for clamping their boxes and lid during glue-up. Finishing options will also be discussed. Finally, adding the previously made hinges to further enhance the appearance of your created keepsake.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: 

The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen does not provide cash refunds for the cancellation of classes unless the class is canceled by the instructor or the Guild.

In order to request a withdrawal from a workshop, students must contact the Guild by phone at 717-431-8706 or contact us here at least 7 days prior to the class. Students who request a withdrawal at least 7 days prior to the class will receive a credit that can be used toward another workshop. No refunds or transfers will be given to cancellation requests made with less than 24 hours’ notice of the class.
