Slow Stitching – July 18

Skill Level: Beginner – Students should know how to thread and sew with a needle.

Slow stitching is the process of adding decoration to fabric through the use of applique, embellishments and simple embroidery stitches. In this slow stitching class students will create an 8”X 8” wall hanging complete with backing and hanging loops. The finished wall hanging includes a whimsical hanger. Students will learn how to choose fabric and cut appliques to hand stitch onto a base fabric utilizing several different embroidery stitches. This class is all hand sewing. Students will be introduced to a new portable textile skill using upcycled fabrics, embellishments and backing a small piece of fabric. The instructor will provide a kit containing all fabric, applique cut out shapes, embroidery floss, stitching needle and hanger.

· Skills Covered: Embroidery stitches including French Knots, Split Stitch

Materials: The instructor will provide a kit with all fabric, applique cutouts, embroidery floss, embellishments and hanger for finished wall hanging. Scissors will be provided during the class.

Cancellations More Than 7 Days Before the Workshop

If a cancellation is made more than 7 days before the workshop, a 10% administrative fee will be deducted from any refund to the original form of payment to cover credit card processing and administrative costs. A workshop credit of 100% of the tuition may also be offered. Workshop credits expire 6 months after the date of the workshop.

Cancellations Within 4-7 Days of the Workshop

Cancellations made within 4 to 7 days of the workshop are not eligible for a refund to the original form of payment but may be transferred to another class or issued as a workshop credit for future use. Workshop credits expire 6 months after the date of the workshop.

Cancellations 3 Days or Less of the Workshop

Cancellations made within 3 days of the workshop are not eligible for a refund or a workshop credit.

No-Show Policy

If you do not notify us ahead of the class and fail to attend, you are not eligible for a refund or a workshop credit.

Classes canceled by the instructor or the Guild.

Students are eligible to receive a 100% refund to the original form of payment or workshop credit if the workshop is canceled by the instructor or the Guild. Workshop credits expire within 6 months of the date of the workshop.

Workshop Teachers

  • Kitty Savel
    Kitty Savel is a Fiber Artist who lives in and practices her art in Dallastown, Pennsylvania. Her Fiber Art includes paper and fabric collage, Embroidery, Slow Stitching, wood and found materials assemblage, knit and crochet, screen and block printing on paper and fabric. Kitty is self-taught with help and input from other Fiber Artists. She has taught and exhibited her fiber art at several venues in the Mid Atlantic States. Kitty is very sensitive to the inspirations around her in in her everyday life. She incorporates recycled materials in her collage and slow stitching work. Color plays a huge role in how Kitty approaches her work. She will take a tree, for instance, and depict it in fabric and paper in colors other than traditional green and brown. Kitty has taught fiber arts classes at several art venues including Center for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh Fiber Arts Guild, Butler County Community College, Maryland Community College, Irman Freeman Center for the Arts, Pittsburgh Fiber Arts Festival, Fabric of Society York. Kitty has exhibited in galleries and museums. Her piece entitled "Color Lattice on Black" was a finalist in the Fusion Art's 3rd Annual Colors International Online Juried Art Exhibition for the month of February 2019. https://fusionartps.com/3rd-colors-art-exhibition-febuary-…/ She has won Honorable Mention for her sweater designs at North Hills Arts Center and her work was featured in the 2020 Achieving Women of Centre County held at the Bellefonte Art Museum in Pennsylvania. In 2026 she will be teaching at the Fiber Arts Fest in Tacoma, Washington and for the Pennsylvania Craftsman’s Guild. In 2024 Kitty collaborated with 10 other knit designers and Vogue Knitting Designer Deborah Newton on a book of hat designs entitled The Year of Hats. This book is available on Amazon and Ravelry.
